How did we get our name?

‘Bang’ is the Thai word for a village situated on a stream, and ‘Pop’ refers to the bold flavours, vibrant colours and larger-than-life personality found in our Yarra-side restaurant. When you combine the two, it only makes sense that our guests can enjoy a truly immersive Thai experience in our colourful restaurant, conveniently situated along the South Wharf Promenade.

Chanyut Nitmaha (Charlie) Head Chef

Charlie has been cooking Thai food for 30 years. He moved to Australia 17 years ago where he’d 
been cooking for 16 years.
Like most Thai, Charlie’s passion for cooking came from his Mum who cooked for weddings and other celebrations in her village, in the Rayong province, east of Bangkok. This love of Thai food has followed Charlie to BangPop where he has been the head chef since mid 2015.  

Piyakun Klomruethai (Bird) Sous Chef 

Bird arrived in Australia 5 years ago and has been cooking for 15 years.

His passion comes from growing up in the Mahanak Market located in Bangkok. This market sells what is said to be the best Pad Thai and Ladna in Thailand.

When bird was 18 he won the gold medal for IFHS Food Contest. This kick started his carrier as a professional chef in Thailand & Australia. 

Together, Charlie and Bird have been a dynamic team in the BangPop kitchen, their gentle nature – even when it’s super busy, has a calming effect on the rest of the team. Their love of Thai food shines in all the dishes they serve, and as everything is made in house, they are extremely proud of the end result.
